Local Spotlight: San Juan County Fair

San Juan County Fair

One of our favorite summer traditions in the San Juan Islands is the annual county fair held in Friday Harbor every August. It includes amusement park rides, carnival games, and cotton candy like any American summer fair, but since our county’s population is only about 16,000, our fair is truly a community event. Not only will you see everyone you know there, but most everyone participates in some form or another. In the last couple of years Luxel employees have taken part in many ways, including entering paintings, judging the photography exhibit, participating in basket-weaving and gardening workshops, or by supporting their children in 4H – particularly the horse games such as barrel racing.

Some popular components of our fair include nightly barbeques hosted by charitable organizations, music on the main stage by local bands, a “Trashion Fashion” show featuring outfits made out of recycled materials, and the infamous Zucchini 500. In this event, children of all ages build small race cars, often using a zucchini as the body of the car, and race them down a ramp in the skate park.  Awards are given both for speed and creativity in design.
